Environmental Impacts of AI

As the 'new unit of compute,' data centers have become the primary driver of load growth in the electric sector. With AI model training and inference driving exponential demand , U.S. data center consumption is projected to reach well over 10% of the grid's capacity by 2030. Current gigawatt-scale developments are outpacing infrastructure, threatening grid reliability and decarbonization goals.

This presentation analyzes the collision between the digital 'datasphere' and physical power limits. We will explore how 'intentional build-out' strategies鈥攊ncorporating clean firm power and grid modernization鈥攃an mitigate stress on power and water systems. Finally, we will frame these challenges within a 25-year strategic horizon , examining how the data sector must integrate with the broader electrification of transportation and the built environment..
